1400 Stars Raise the Banner of Rebellion Against the Paramount and Warner Bros Merger

Khaberni - In a notable escalation within the corridors of the entertainment industry, more than 1400 stars and creators in Hollywood have united to oppose a major merger deal between Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery, warning of its implications for the future of creativity and competition in the sector.

The open letter was signed by prominent names such as Emma Thompson, Ben Stiller, Javier Bardem, and Rose Byrne, where the proposed merger was considered to increase the concentration of power within a media market already dominated by a limited number of major entities, according to "BBC".

The letter stated: "This deal will deepen the centralization of the media landscape and reduce competition at a time when our industry - and the audience - cannot afford more contraction".

Reduced opportunities due to the $111 billion deal
The signatories also warned that the deal, valued at about $111 billion, might lead to a reduction in the number of major film studios in the United States to just four, which means fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs, and narrower options for the audience.

Other stars such as Kristen Stewart and Glenn Close have joined the list of opponents as the number of signatories continues to grow.

Significant pressure and fewer jobs
This move comes at a time when Hollywood is still suffering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the effects of union strikes in 2023, besides the radical transformations imposed by technology companies and changing viewer behavior.

In a notable stance, writer and producer Damon Lindelof expressed his rejection of the deal, saying that "mergers mean fewer jobs and fewer jobs", warning of the inevitable result of this decision, which is the closure of production sites and their transformation into "ghost towns".

On the other hand, Paramount defended the deal, affirming its commitment to supporting talent and expanding the showcasing opportunities, emphasizing that the merger will allow the production of more bold projects and delivering content to a broader global audience.

Paramount Sky Dance, led by CEO David Ellison, also explained that it plans to maintain the independence of the studios, with an increase in film production to reach about 30 films annually.

Despite the broad controversy, the deal is still awaiting approval from shareholders and regulatory bodies, amid increasing pressure from within the industry to stop it.
