Khaberni - Kuwait has decided to withdraw its nationality from 2182 persons in addition to those who acquired it with them by dependency, including the well-known Islamic preacher Nabil Al-Awadi.
The official Kuwaiti newspaper "Kuwait Today" reported on Monday that "three Amiri decrees were issued ordering the withdrawal of nationality from 2182 persons, in addition to those who acquired it with them by dependency from spouses and children".
The list included names among them the well-known preacher Nabil Al-Awadi, whose nationality had previously been withdrawn, before it was reinstated to him.
In commenting on the decision, Al-Awadi wrote in a tweet via the American company "X" platform: "Praise be to God in all circumstances, and to God we belong and to Him we shall return."
Al-Awadi was born to a stateless family in Kuwait and was granted nationality in 1998.
In 2014, the Kuwaiti Cabinet issued a decision to withdraw the nationality of 10 persons including Al-Awadi, but the government reinstated it to him in 2018.
This is not the first decision taken by Kuwait in the context of reviewing decisions of those who obtained nationality in the country.
In September 2024, the Kuwaiti authorities began a campaign targeting "cases of forged and dual nationality," including those extending back decades.
The Minister of Interior and President of the Supreme Committee for Kuwaiti Nationality, Fahd Yousuf Saud Al-Sabah, said in December last year, that those from whom nationality was withdrawn will enjoy all the previous benefits when they held Kuwaiti nationality.
