Khaberni - In the southern Chubut province of Argentina, environmental advocates spotted rare evidence of a blue whale during an exploratory trip to recognize humpback whales and C-whales, according to Buenos Aires Times.
This is the first time this species has been spotted inside the Azul Patagonia Regional Park.
Discovered by chance
According to what was published by Yahoo, blue whales have been recorded in other areas of Argentina, but not frequently, so the environmental protection team was surprised by the massive blue whale.
Biologist Tomas Tamaniyo, who was on board the ship during the spotting, told "Buenos Aires Times": "We came across this whale as it surfaced, but this whale was different - it was gigantic, much larger than any whale we had seen before."
He explained further: "We approached a bit cautiously, to see what it was, and found ourselves face to face with a blue whale." Fortunately, we were able to get reasonably close and take some good pictures.
The largest animal on Earth
The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth and is classified as an endangered species. It lives in all the oceans except the Arctic Ocean and faces threats from whaling, boats, and fishing gear.
Officials in Argentina confirmed that this sighting is an important achievement for the protection of the marine environment and biological diversity in the area, thanks to the efforts made by local organizations.
Support for whales
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whales need support to increase their numbers, such as establishing protected corridors, preventing boat accidents, and reducing noise in the ocean.
Environmental preservation advocates use many tools to manage and protect the environment, and cameras have become an indispensable tool in this work.
Whether they are cameras fixed in remote locations, such as tracking devices fitted with suction cups on young humpback whales, or shots from exploratory boat trips, they help scientists assess the health of endangered species and document evidence of rehabilitation efforts.
