AlKhashman Calls for Extending the Deadline for Traffic Fines Discount to Relieve Pressure on Jordanians

Khaberni - Member of Parliament, Captain Zuhair Mohammad Al-Khashman, during his participation in the program "Panorama Al-Mamlaka", emphasized the necessity of extending the deadline to benefit from a 30% discount on traffic violations, stressing that real justice is not limited to issuing the decision, but extends to enabling the citizen to actually benefit from it amid living conditions and pressures that accompanied the entire grace period. This comes at a time when the government had decided, in its session held on February 17, 2026, to grant a 30% discount on traffic violations due before this date, provided they are paid within 60 days, a period that actually ends on April 18, 2026, unless a new decision is issued to extend it.

Al-Khashman stated that the demand for extension is based on a realistic reading of the citizens' circumstances during this period, not on an objection to the decision itself, explaining that the grace period coincided with the holy month of Ramadan, which began in Jordan on Thursday, February 19, 2026, a period during which family expenses and daily and social commitments naturally rise, weakening the ability of a broad segment of citizens to provide additional liquidity to pay fines within a limited period.

He added that the discount period did not stop with the Ramadan pressure, but also overlapped with Eid al-Fitr, which occurred in Jordan on Friday, March 20, 2026, and the accompanying financial burdens known to Jordanian families, in addition to an official holiday that lasted for several days, making the time window granted to benefit from the discount one of the most financially pressing periods on household budgets.

Al-Khashman indicated that Jordanian families were also in the middle of the second academic semester, which officially began on Sunday, January 25, 2026, with its transportation costs, stationeries, and ongoing educational commitments, in addition to the approach of the General Secondary Examinations for 12th-grade students starting on May 6, 2026, meaning that many families were already under accumulated financial pressure before reaching the issue of violations.

Al-Khashman emphasized that the government decision is positive in principle, but he believes that the benefit from it was not equitable among all citizens, as the discount benefits those who have the capacity for immediate payment more significantly, while the most financially pressed groups might be deprived of the actual benefit despite their greater need for it. He confirmed that extending the grace period would widen the base of beneficiaries and transforms the decision from a theoretical opportunity to a real and tangible relief felt by the Jordanian citizen in their daily life.

Al-Khashman concluded by reaffirming that standing with the citizen requires considering the timing of decisions as much as considering their content, pointing out that extending today does not affect the dignity of the law, but enhances the goal that the government declared it aims to achieve, which is to alleviate the people’s burdens and encourage them to settle their traffic affairs under more just and realistic conditions.
