Khaberni - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs Ayman Safadi today hosted the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, and Development Cooperation of the Kingdom of Belgium, Maxim Prevot, who arrived in Jordan after a visit to the sisterly Lebanese Republic.
The ministers held talks that affirmed the mutual commitment to developing historic friendly relations between the two countries, and discussed efforts targeting the cessation of the serious escalation currently seen in the region.
Safadi and Prevot condemned the Israeli attacks on the Lebanese Republic, which resulted in a large number of civilian casualties, reaffirmed their full solidarity with Lebanon, their steadfast support for its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens, the necessity of an immediate ceasefire and adherence to the ceasefire agreement reached on November 27, 2024, and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 in all its provisions, and support for the efforts of the Lebanese government in asserting its sovereignty over its entire territory and activating its institutions and monopolizing arms in the hands of the state.
Safadi stressed the urgency of launching an immediate international movement to stop the Israeli aggression on Lebanon immediately and condemn the clear violation of international law and serious escalation it represents, which threatens regional security and stability.
Safadi and Prevot emphasized the need for international efforts to provide urgent humanitarian support to Lebanon; to meet the needs of over a million Lebanese who have been displaced from their homes and villages.
The ministers renewed their welcome of reaching a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. Safadi stressed the necessity for negotiations to lead to a comprehensive and lasting calm on bases that ensure respect for international law, state sovereignty, address the causes of accumulated tensions over the past decades, and enhance security and stability in the region.
The ministers discussed the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, where Safadi emphasized the need to stabilize the situation in Gaza, and remove all obstacles to the entry of humanitarian aid into the sector.
Safadi emphasized the need to stop Israel's illegitimate actions that lead to further escalations and undermine the two-state solution and efforts to achieve fair and comprehensive peace, especially with regards to settlement building, expansion, land annexation, assaults on the freedom of worship, and violations of the existing historical and legal status of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
Safadi valued Belgium's supportive stance on the right of the Palestinian people to their independent state on their national soil based on the two-state solution, and its support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Safadi and Prevot confirmed the strength of the friendship and partnership between Jordan and Belgium, and the mutual commitment to enhancing the prospects for bilateral cooperation in various fields including trade, investment, and defense, to serve the interests of both countries, within the framework of the strategic partnership with the European Union.
The ministers agreed to continue working on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various areas, coordinating on issues of mutual interest, and following up on developments in the region.
