Khaberni - Media reports on Sunday revealed that Antonio Conte has become the leading candidate to return to coaching the Italian national football team, succeeding Gennaro Gattuso.
The 56-year-old coach expressed great enthusiasm to take on the role for the second time in his career, although Conte's current contract with Napoli runs until June 2027.
Reports indicate that the club president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, would not mind his departure next summer to coach Italy, especially if Giovanni Malago is elected as the new president of the Italian Football Federation on June 22, as mentioned by "La Gazzetta dello Sport" on Sunday.
Conte previously led the Italian team between 2014 and 2016, reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championship before being knocked out by Germany in a penalty shootout, and he enjoys significant support within the Italian federation.
Silvio Baldini is expected to be appointed as the interim coach to lead the Italian team in friendly matches during June, with the permanent coach being announced at the end of June or beginning of July.
