Wall Street Journal Mediation Efforts Between the US and Iran Reach an Impasse

Khaberni  - The American "Wall Street Journal" reported on Friday evening that the current mediation efforts led by countries in the region, including Pakistan, to reach a ceasefire between the United States and Israel on one hand, and Iran on the other hand, "have reached an impasse".

It added that Iran has informed the mediators it is not prepared to meet with American officials in Islamabad in the coming days, stating that it considers the American conditions for ceasing warfare "unacceptable".

The newspaper also mentioned that Turkey and Egypt are still pushing to find a way out and are considering new venues for the talks among them Doha or Istanbul, alongside new proposals to break the deadlock in the mediation efforts.

Meanwhile, the semi-official Iranian news agency "Fars" quoted an unnamed source this Friday evening, reporting that Tehran rejected an American proposal for a 48-hour ceasefire.

The source added that the proposal was made last Wednesday, through another country not named in the report.

Diplomatic Efforts

The Pakistani Foreign Minister confirmed last Thursday that his country delivered a 15-point American plan to stop the war to Iran, acting as a mediator between Tehran and Washington.

The Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar wrote on the platform "X", "Indirect talks are taking place between the United States and Iran through messages conveyed by Pakistan".

He also noted that Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt discussed last Sunday, "ways to end the war in the Middle East permanently", adding also that China supports the initiative of hosting possible American-Iranian talks in Islamabad.

Since February 28, Israel and the United States have launched attacks on Iran, killing hundreds including the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as many military leaders, causing widespread destruction.

In response, Tehran has launched rockets and drones towards Israel, resulting in at least 16 deaths and hundreds of injuries, in addition to attacks killing 13 American soldiers, according to Anadolu Agency.

Iran also mounts attacks on what it claims to be "American bases and interests in the Gulf states", but some of these have killed and injured civilians and damaged civil sites.

It was also caught off guard by a surprise attack on February 28, despite having announced progress in negotiations with the United States regarding its nuclear program via Omani mediation.

Washington and Tel Aviv accuse Tehran of possessing both, nuclear and missile programs, that pose threats to Israel and friendly regional countries, whereas Iran states its nuclear program is peaceful and is not seeking to produce nuclear weapons.

Israel is the only country in the region that possesses an undeclared nuclear weapons arsenal, which is not subjected to international supervision.
