Khaberni - Dozens of MPs in the Mauritanian parliament protested on Wednesday evening in front of the National Assembly headquarters in the capital, Nouakchott, against the Israeli parliament's (Knesset) ratification of a law that entails executing Palestinian prisoners.
MPs from various parliamentary blocs participated in the protest, from both the majority and the opposition, chanting slogans denouncing the law and raising banners rejecting what they called "racist and inhumane legislation," affirming that it represents a serious escalation against the Palestinian people.
The leader of the ruling "Insaf" party’s parliamentary group, Mohamed Amin Oumar, stated that this stance is to express the MPs' condemnation of this law, considering it "a reflection of the occupation's criminality".
Opposition MP, Mohamed Amin Sidi Mouloud, expressed the Mauritanian parliament's condemnation of this step, affirming that the position reflects a national consensus. He added: "Today, Mauritanians, both majority and opposition, are sending a clear message condemning this crime."
In the same context, 31 Mauritanian political parties, including the ruling "Insaf" party and the "National Rally for Reform and Development" (the largest opposition party), issued a joint statement condemning the law and deeming it a crime contrary to human rights principles and international conventions, specifically the Geneva Conventions relating to the protection of prisoners.
The parties called on the international community, United Nations bodies, and human rights organizations to assume their responsibilities and act urgently to stop these violations and hold those responsible accountable.
The participants in the protest confirmed that Mauritania, both people and parliament, stands with the Palestinian cause, rejecting all forms of aggression and violations that are incompatible with international laws and customs.
The Knesset, the Israeli parliament, had ratified on Monday evening, in the second and third readings, a bill executing Palestinian prisoners, with a majority of 62 members against 48 opponents and one abstention, out of 120, supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to data, more than 9,500 Palestinians, including 350 children and 66 women, are held in Israeli prisons under harsh conditions including torture, starvation, and medical neglect, according to human rights reports, resulting in the death of several.
Since October 2023, Israel has intensified its measures against prisoners, in parallel with the genocide it is committing in the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the martyrdom of more than 72,000 Palestinians and the injury of about 172,000, mostly women and children.
