Khaberni - The El-Zeitoun district in the center of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, witnessed a terrifying disaster after a massive fire broke out inside a clothing factory and warehouse in a 12-story building, resulting in the death of 9 people and injuring 9 others, including 5 in critical condition.
The fire erupted on Tuesday afternoon and firefighting operations continued until dawn on Wednesday, with fire teams continuing cooling efforts during the day to prevent the fire from reigniting.
The police arrested three siblings who owned the factory, after investigations proved that the facility was operating without a legal license and lacked the necessary safety measures, while the public prosecutor began investigations and requested forensic reports to determine the causes of death, in addition to forming an urgent engineering committee to examine the damaged property and its suitability for habitation.
The Cairo civil defense forces managed to control the fire after long hours of effort, with 6 fire trucks and 10 ambulance vehicles involved, where the electrical and gas utilities were precautionarily disconnected, and the injured were transported to the hospital for necessary treatment.
The tragic incident has brought to the forefront the issue of industrial safety and surveillance of unlicensed factories, amid calls for stricter measures to protect the lives of workers and residents.
