Khaberni - Despite Apple's shift to the USB-C port in its latest phones, some users still yearn for the Lightning port, especially as they own a large number of old cables.
In this context, freelance engineer Ken Pillonel created an unconventional solution, consisting of a custom cover for the iPhone 17 Pro that actually adds a Lightning port to the device.
How does the cover work?
The design relies on integrating a Lightning to USB-C adapter inside the cover itself, using custom electronic boards (PCBs), which allows charging the phone via a Lightning cable as if it were an original part of the device.
The cover was manufactured using 3D printing with TPU material, with a precise design aimed at minimizing size as much as possible, without affecting ease of use, according to a report published by "gsmarena" and reviewed by "Al Arabiya Business".
Unconventional Innovations
This is not Pillonel’s first attempt, as he was previously known for unconventional projects, including adding a USB-C port to the iPhone X before Apple officially adopted this change, along with other modifications that included AirPods devices.
He has also worked on developing practical solutions, such as covers that add USB-C to older iPhone models, aiming to improve repairability and extend the lifespan of devices.
Practical solution or just an experiment?
Although the idea might seem strange to some, it offers a practical solution for a category of users who still rely on Lightning cables, especially in the gradual transition towards USB-C.
In the end, this innovation reflects an aspect of the creativity of the independent developer community, who continue to offer alternative solutions that challenge the decisions of major companies, even if these solutions are out of the ordinary.
