683 alcoholrelated accidents in Jordan during 2025

Khaberni - The annual report on traffic accidents for the year 2025 revealed that the number of traffic accidents that involved drivers while consuming alcoholic beverages or exceeding the blood alcohol concentration limit reached 683 accidents, distributed into 646 collisions, 20 run-overs, and 17 rollovers throughout the year.

The report, monitored by "Al Mamlaka", indicated that these accidents resulted in 62 human injuries and 3 fatalities, with injuries distributed as 39 minor, 19 moderate, and 4 severe.

The statistical analysis included in the report showed that minor injuries constituted 60% of the total injuries resulting from these accidents, followed by moderate injuries at 29.2%, and severe injuries at 6.2%, while the fatality rate was 4.6% of the total injuries.

The analysis also showed that collision accidents accounted for 61.5% of all human injuries related to alcohol, followed by run-over accidents at 35.4%, while rollover accidents were at 3.1%.

Regarding the age distribution of the drivers responsible for these accidents, the data showed that younger age groups registered the highest rates, with 99 accidents for the age group 27-29 years, 91 accidents for the age group 30-32 years, 90 accidents for the age group 24-26 years, 67 accidents for the age group 21-23 years, and 30 accidents for the age group 18-20 years.

The statistical analysis indicated that 41% of the drivers involved in alcohol-related accidents were within the age range of 24-32 years, which suggests that these accidents are concentrated in younger age groups.

The report showed that 89.8% of the drivers involved in these accidents committed traffic violations, compared to only 70 cases where the drivers committed no errors, with lane violations leading the list of errors at 51.1% (313 cases), followed by not taking necessary precautions at 19.1% (117 cases), not maintaining a safe distance at 9.8% (60 cases), and priority violations at 6.4% (39 cases).

The violations also included; reversing in a manner that impedes traffic at 3.6% (22 cases), and speed violations at 3.3% (20 cases), while other errors were distributed at lower rates including improper handling of curves at 2.0%, driving in the opposite direction at 1.1%, and violating a traffic signal at 1.0%, in addition to other violations with rates under 1%.

The data indicated that alcohol-related accidents predominantly occur in evening and night times, with the period from 18:00 to 23:59 recording the highest number with 304 accidents and 44.5% of the total accidents, followed by the period from 00:00 to 05:59 with 282 accidents and 41.3%, while the period from 12:00 to 17:59 had 58 accidents with 8.5%, and the period from 06:00 to 11:59 ranked last with 39 accidents and 5.7%, signifying that the majority of these accidents occur during evening and post-midnight hours.

On a monthly basis, the report showed that October registered the highest percentage of alcohol-related accidents with 74 accidents at 10.8% of the total, followed by June with 66 accidents (9.7%), then May and January each with 65 accidents (9.5%), July with 64 accidents (9.4%), April with 59 accidents (8.6%), August with 58 accidents (8.5%), September with 53 accidents (7.8%), February with 52 accidents (7.6%), and December with 51 accidents (7.5%), while March recorded the lowest number with 19 accidents at 2.8%.

In the geographical distribution, the capital province recorded the highest number of alcohol-related accidents with 411 accidents and 60.2% of the total, followed by Irbid with 79 accidents (11.6%), and Balqa with 51 accidents (7.5%), and Zarqa with 50 accidents (7.3%), and Karak with 35 accidents (5.1%), while other accidents were distributed among other provinces with fewer numbers, among them Aqaba with 20 accidents (2.9%), and Madaba and Ajloun each with 10 accidents (1.5%), and Jerash with 8 accidents (1.2%), and Mafraq with 6 accidents (0.9%), and Ma'an with two accidents (0.3%), and Tafilah with one accident (0.1%).

The report also showed that roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h recorded the highest rate of alcohol-related accidents with 238 accidents and 34.8% of the total, followed by roads with a speed limit of 40 km/h with 221 accidents (32.4%), then roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h with 147 accidents (21.5%).

Accidents on higher speed limits had lower rates, with roads at 80 km/h recording 36 accidents (5.3%), and 70 km/h with 14 accidents (2.0%), and 100 km/h with 12 accidents (1.8%), and less than 40 km/h with 10 accidents (1.5%), and 90 km/h with 3 accidents (0.4%), and 110 km/h with two accidents (0.3%), indicating that the majority of these accidents occur on roads within cities.

Regarding lighting conditions, the data showed that 448 accidents (65.6%) of the alcohol-related accidents occurred during the night with adequate lighting, compared to 149 accidents (21.8%) during the day, and 62 accidents (9.1%) during the night with inadequate lighting, and 11 accidents (1.6%) in dark conditions, in addition to 8 accidents (1.2%) during sunrise and 5 accidents (0.7%) during sunset, confirming that nighttime driving is the environment most associated with this type of accident.
