Closure of Petra Archaeological Reserve to Visitors on Thursday as a Precaution Due to Weather Conditions

Khaberni - The Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority has decided to completely close the Petra Archaeological Reserve to visitors on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as a precautionary measure in light of the prevailing and expected weather conditions for tomorrow.

Commissioner for Management of Archaeological and Tourism Affairs, Engineer Yazan Mahadin in the authority said that the decision to close was made after close monitoring of weather reports, which indicate that the area will be affected by heavy rainfall which may lead to continued formation of flash floods tomorrow, Thursday, especially in low-lying areas and narrow passages within the archaeological site.

Mahadin emphasized that the safety of visitors and staff is a top priority for the authority, noting that taking such precautionary decisions aims to avoid any potential risks and to protect lives and property.

Mahadin added that the authority's teams had raised the readiness level early on, intensifying the inspection of flood channels and water drainage culverts within the reserve and its surroundings, and throughout all the settlements of the Petra region, in addition to setting up emergency plans to deal with any developments that may arise due to the weather conditions.

He clarified that the emergency teams will remain on standby around the clock, coordinating with the security services and civil defense to monitor developments in the weather conditions and take the necessary actions promptly.

Mahadin called on citizens and visitors to comply with the instructions, and to follow the authority's official channels to stay updated, confirming that the reopening of the reserve will take place as soon as the weather conditions stabilize and the site is fully ready to welcome visitors again.
