Meta begins to lay off hundreds of employees to face the costs of artificial intelligence

Khaberni - Meta Platforms has begun laying off hundreds of its employees, as part of a major restructuring plan to address the rising costs of artificial intelligence and improve operational efficiency across various teams.

An informed source told Reuters that Meta Platforms began the layoffs on Wednesday, involving several hundred employees across multiple teams.

Reuters reported earlier this month that Meta plans to conduct extensive layoffs that could affect 20% or more of its employees, and that senior executives have asked the senior management to start planning how to reduce the number of staff.

The layoffs started today on a smaller scale, and include according to a previous report by The Information, the "Reality Labs" section, social media teams, and recruitment operations.

A spokesperson for Meta said in a statement: "Different teams regularly restructure or implement changes to ensure the best position to achieve their goals. We also look for alternative opportunities for the affected employees if possible."

The parent company of Facebook is seeking to offset the rising costs associated with its massive investments in the field of artificial intelligence, after it predicted total expenses ranging between $162 and $169 billion in 2026, with rising employee compensation and spending millions to hire the best talents in the sector.

The company's annual report revealed that the number of employees was close to 79,000 as of December 31, 2025.
