The government Stability in the poultry sector and availability of red meat in Jordan

Khaberni - The Assistant Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture for Livestock, Misbah Al-Tarawneh, confirmed on Wednesday that the poultry sector in Jordan is experiencing noticeable stability, supported by the availability of feed and the continuation of production within safe levels, alongside a sufficient strategic stock of red meat covering the needs of the local market.

Al-Tarawneh pointed out that the poultry sector is one of the most developed sectors in the Middle East and North Africa, with investments exceeding 2.4 billion dinars, reflecting its pivotal role in enhancing national food security. He noted that the Kingdom has achieved advanced levels of self-sufficiency, with self-sufficiency in poultry meat exceeding 80%, and 100% in table eggs, while monthly production exceeds 33,000 tons of poultry meat, in addition to about 40 million hatching eggs.

He explained that Jordan possesses a feed stock lasting 110 days, emphasizing the ministry's commitment to ensuring the availability of production inputs, especially yellow corn and soybean meal, according to precise technical specifications and from safe origins. He clarified that setting a maximum breakage rate of 7% in yellow corn aims to preserve its nutritional value, particularly its starch content, which positively reflects on production efficiency and price stability.

He added that a higher breakage rate leads to increased feed consumption and higher risks of fungal contamination, which the ministry is working to minimize through strict adherence to specifications. Regarding import volumes, he mentioned that the Kingdom imported about 650,000 tons of yellow corn and 350,000 tons of soybean meal in the year 2025, while imports since the beginning of 2026 amounted to about 123,000 tons of corn and 109,000 tons of soybean meal, with expectations of receiving additional shipments estimated at 280,000 tons of corn and 50,000 tons of soybean meal in the coming period.

Relatedly, Al-Tarawneh confirmed the availability of an adequate strategic stock of red meat, noting that the ministry has diversified importing sources through 21 different origins, including fresh, chilled, and frozen meats, which enhances market flexibility.

He explained that doors were recently opened for importing chilled veal from Egypt, in addition to importing fresh sheep and goat meat from Syria, as part of enhancing supply and providing multiple options for citizens at affordable prices. He also mentioned that local production covers about 42% of the market's needs for red meat, reflecting the importance of the local sector as a key partner in achieving food security.

Al-Tarawneh reiterated that the ministry closely monitors daily market conditions and stock levels, taking necessary actions to ensure price stability and the availability of basic commodities, reaffirming that food supplies are available in sufficient quantities during the current period.
