Araghchi Targeting Bushehr May Lead to Extensive Radiation Leak

Khaberni - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned of serious repercussions of any military targeting of the Bushehr nuclear station, stating that such a scenario could lead to the leak of massive amounts of radioactive material, posing a direct threat to the environment and populations both inside and outside Iran.

This warning came in an official letter from Araghchi to the United Nations Security Council, against the backdrop of attacks that he stated were carried out by the United States and Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities, considering these attacks as a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter, as well as a violation of the statutes of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Nuclear materials
Araghchi pointed out that the Bushehr station is an active nuclear facility containing thousands of kilograms of nuclear materials, warning that any direct damage to it could result in the release of very large amounts of radioactive materials into the environment, while targeting its power supply lines could disrupt cooling systems, potentially leading to a reactor core meltdown and widespread radiation dispersion.

He added that targeting nuclear facilities, even in the context of conflicts, is prohibited under the rules of international humanitarian law, given the grave risks involved that exceed the boundaries of the targeted state, extending to regional and international security and safety.

He also emphasized that such attacks not only violate humanitarian rules but also affect international environmental law, due to the potential to cause widespread and long-lasting damage to the natural environment.

"Immediate and decisive actions"
Araghchi called on the Security Council to take immediate and decisive actions to condemn these attacks, obligate the responsible parties to halt them immediately, and ensure they are not repeated and compensate for the resulting damages.

In conclusion, his letter emphasized that continued targeting of peaceful nuclear facilities undermines the non-proliferation treaty system and weakens the credibility of the relevant international institutions, thereby posing a direct threat to international peace and security.
