Zelensky Hopes to Keep Ukraine a Priority for Washington Despite the War with Iran

Khaberni - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope on Sunday that the United States would continue its efforts to end the Russian invasion, despite Washington's focus on the war with Iran, following talks in Florida between officials from both sides.

The American envoy Steve Whitcov, who is leading the negotiation efforts, reported unspecified progress over two days of talks that followed the United States easing sanctions on Russian oil.

Zelensky said in an evening speech that "the primary focus of the American side is currently on the situation around Iran and in that region, but the war Russia is waging against Ukraine must also end."

He added, "The world sees it the same way, and I am very grateful to the American community for their clear support for a normal and dignified peace for Ukraine."

He mentioned that he would consult with the Ukrainian team upon his return, expressing hope for the continuation of the diplomatic path between Kyiv and Washington.

He said, "That would be very good news and proof that diplomacy works. We hope that this will be achieved."

Whitcov wrote on the "X" platform that the two sides "focused on key points to define a sustainable and reliable security framework for Ukraine, as well as vital humanitarian efforts in the region."

He had deleted a previous post that mentioned "progress on a fundamental humanitarian issue."

Former American President Donald Trump had pledged to end the war on the first day of his return to the White House 14 months ago.

Trump repeatedly pressured Ukraine to make concessions to end the war that Russia started in February 2022.
