How Two Minutes in Front of a Natural Scene Can Change Your Brain Chemistry

Khaberni - A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California revealed astounding results about the impact of "moments of awe" in nature on the human brain.

The research, published by "Outside Online," proved that spending just two minutes contemplating a stunning natural landscape can significantly boost levels of happiness and satisfaction.

"A few magical minutes"

The study, which lasted two years, included 1000 participants who engaged in various activities such as hiking, kayaking, and visiting mountain overlooks at Lake Tahoe. The preliminary results showed tangible shifts in the psychological state of the participants after just two minutes:

Increased happiness: went up by 33%.
Feeling of awe: increased by 70%.
Enhanced satisfaction: the level of satisfaction and contentment rose by 37% just by looking at a beautiful scene.
Reduced anxiety: water-based activities helped reduce anxiety levels by 7%.

The Importance of "Awe"

Dr. Paul Biv, the lead researcher in the study, explains that feelings of awe shift our focus outward instead of inward. When a person encounters something vast and magnificent, like the stars or mountains, they begin to see themselves and their relationships in a different light, enhancing a sense of connection with the universe and others.

The study also found that these experiences increase the desire for "environmental stewardship" and the protection of the Earth by 20%.

Concurrent with these findings, a documentary series titled Beyond Awe Struck: The Scientific Search for Connection started airing on March 16, 2026, which traces the scientific journey to explore the connections between nature and the human brain.
