Khaberni - The thyroid gland is butterfly-shaped and is located at the base of the neck beneath the "Adam's apple." Despite its small size, according to experts, it plays a central role in the body, producing hormones that control the rate of calorie burning, heart rate, digestion, and even mood.
Studies, such as those published by Women’s Health OASH, indicate that thyroid diseases are more common among women, especially after significant hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause.
Common conditions include hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid enlargement or inflammation, and thyroid nodules or cysts, which are often benign and asymptomatic. However, some of them may be associated with thyroid cancer.
To help spot any early signs, Unai Dueñas, a thyroid specialist, shared a simple method on TikTok that can be applied at home in just 30 seconds. You only need a mirror, a chair, and a glass of water.
The method involves sitting in front of the mirror, tilting your head slightly back, and taking a sip of water while watching the base of the neck under the Adam's apple. If any swelling or abnormal movement occurs during swallowing, this may indicate the presence of a nodule or enlargement that needs medical evaluation.
Dueñas emphasizes that this method is not a substitute for a medical examination but only aids in initial observation. Specialists stress the importance of immediately consulting a doctor if any swelling or difficulty in swallowing or breathing is noticed, as treatments vary depending on the condition and include medications, radioactive iodine treatment, or surgery.
Experts indicate that regular monitoring and awareness of any changes in the body remain the most important means of maintaining thyroid health and avoiding serious complications.
