55 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Northeastern Turkey

Khaberni - A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the province of Tokat in northeastern Turkey, as announced by the Turkish Disaster Management Agency on Friday.

The Turkish agency reported "after the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 5.5 and occurred at 03:35 (00:35 GMT) in the Niksar district of Tokat province, and was also felt by residents in the provinces of Samsun, Amasya, Ordu, and Sivas, no damages have been reported so far".

It added: "Our work on the ground will continue" to assess any potential damages.

The governor of Tokat, in turn, announced the closure of schools on Friday.

Southeastern Turkey suffered a severe earthquake in February 2023, which killed at least 53,000 people and destroyed the city of Antakya.
