11173 Regulatory Tours Conducted by the Food and Drug Administration in Two Months

Khaberni - The General Food and Drug Administration conducted 11173 inspection tours, which included the suspension of facilities and the destruction of non-compliant food items since the beginning of the year until the beginning of this March, according to the General Director Rana Obaidat.

This was in a meeting held by the Parliamentary Health and Food Committee, on Tuesday, with Obaidat and a number of stakeholders in the administration, to learn about the role of the administration and its supervisory efforts in monitoring the safety of food and medicine in the kingdom.

Obaidat clarified that the destruction of food items and the closure of offending premises only occurs after proving their unsuitability, confirming that destruction is limited only to high-risk materials, whereas dangerous offenses are referred to the public prosecutor for necessary legal action.

She indicated that the administration's supervisory procedures rely on the Food and Drug Law No. (30), noting that during the holy month of Ramadan, the administration's teams conducted around 6400 inspection tours, which resulted in 244 suspension actions and 24 closures, in addition to the destruction of about 3 tons of juices.

The Parliamentary Health and Food Committee, chaired by MP Ahmad Al-Sarrahneh, affirmed the importance of the role played by the Food and Drug Administration in maintaining the health of the citizens and the safety of their food.

Al-Sarrahneh pointed out that the administration is in direct contact with the food and medicine of Jordanians, which places on it a significant responsibility to ensure their safety, emphasizing the importance of integration and cooperation between the parliamentary committee and the administration, which positively reflects on the health of the citizens.

He stressed the necessity to achieve balance in applying penalties, so they are not unduly harsh, and at the same time, not being lenient with any violations concerning the citizens' food or medicine that could affect their health.

In turn, the deputies Shaher Shatnawi, Hokam Al-Ma'adat, Abdel Nasser Al-Khasawneh, and Hail Ayash, stressed the importance of tightening control over food and medicine and imposing deterring penalties against violators to maintain the safety of citizens.
