Italy sends a frigate to Cyprus amidst the war in the Middle East

Khaberni - Italy will send a frigate from its naval fleet to protect Cyprus, following an announcement by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday, days after a drone targeted a British base on the Mediterranean island.

Meloni said in a recorded speech: "To ensure the security of the European Union's borders, we will send an Italian frigate to Cyprus," but she clarified that "our position is very clear: Italy is not part of the war and has no intention of being part of it."

Media reported that the frigate "Federico Martinengo," equipped with missiles and carrying a crew of more than 160 individuals, left the city of Taranto in southern Italy on Friday afternoon.

Meloni added that Italy is holding talks with Britain, France, and Germany on ways to "avoid further escalation."

On Thursday, the Prime Minister announced that Rome plans to send air defense aid to the Gulf countries affected by strikes conducted by Tehran, justified by targeting American bases in the region.
