Khaberni - A study conducted by scientists from Nippon Dental University in Japan has shown that chlorogenic acid, a natural compound found in coffee beans, helps maintain oral health and protects against gum inflammation.
The researchers indicated that periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that destroys the tissues supporting the teeth. The disease's progression is associated with the formation of plaque, a dense bacterial biofilm that is difficult to completely remove using ordinary cleaning methods. Hence, their study focused on substances that could help inhibit the growth of bacteria and inflammation more effectively.
In laboratory experiments, the researchers examined the effect of chlorogenic acid on gum tissue cells and the supporting ligaments of the teeth after they were stimulated with bacterial toxins. The analysis showed that this compound reduces the production of inflammatory molecules, such as interleukin-1β and interleukin-8, which play a key role in the development of inflammation and the destruction of oral tissues. Furthermore, this substance inhibited the growth of several oral bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum, the latter of which is an important link in the formation of a mature bacterial biofilm that typically forms on teeth.
The researchers note that chlorogenic acid possesses both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, making it a potential component for use in oral care products like mouthwashes.
