What is the secret behind the baby brain phenomenon in pregnant women

Khaberni - A recent study revealed that what is known as "baby brain" in pregnant women may actually be an advanced brain restructuring process in preparation for motherhood, rather than just a temporary memory loss as previously thought.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Communications, where the "Be A Mother" project team followed 127 women through a series of MRI scans and hormone tests before, during, and after pregnancy to reveal astonishing physical changes in the brain.

The study showed that pregnant women lost about 5% of their gray matter, which is the tissue responsible for processing emotions, information, and empathy.

The lead researcher, Professor Susana Carmona from the Gregorio Marañón Institute, explained that this loss is similar to a "pruning process" where some branches are removed to facilitate growth and efficiency, confirming that the brain is preparing for maternal instincts.

Although the gray matter partially returns within six months after giving birth, the initial transformation shows the brain's specialization for maternal functions, and not a regression in mental capacity as previously thought.

The participants in the study indicated that forgetting some details or having mental lapses during pregnancy does not mean a loss of intelligence, but is part of the brain's adaptation to the demands of motherhood.

One participant said, "Instead of becoming less intelligent, we become more capable of focusing on what motherhood needs."

The team compared the pregnant women to a control group of 52 women who had never been pregnant, where no change in brain structure was observed in the control group, while the pregnant women experienced clear neurological remodeling, driven by hormonal shifts, changes in blood vessels, and neural networks.

The study showed that these changes reflect the brain's ability to adapt and specialize for new tasks, confirming that "baby brain" is not an indicator of mental weakness, but of enhanced neural readiness for motherhood.
