Jordanian Cybersecurity Irans Breach of Silo System Due to Weak Password Exploitation

Khaberni  - Mohamed Al-Smadi, the head of the National Center for Cybersecurity, said that the center detected on Monday an attempt by an Iranian cyber group to access the systems of the public silo company in Irbid in an attempt to tamper with its systems, including temperature controls, scales, and backup power.

Al-Smadi  added on Thursday, that the breach occurred due to the exploitation of a weak password by one of the system users in the company, where the attackers were able to access all parts of the network of the public silo company before they were stopped by the National Center for Cybersecurity.

He also confirmed that the National Center for Cybersecurity controlled the Iranian breach of the silo company's network after the attacker accessed the energy system and before reaching the rest of the systems.

Al-Smadi also confirmed that the rapid detection and response from the center enabled them to avoid a major Iranian breach that could have had severe consequences on the safety of the wheat stock.

He emphasized the need for all public and private institutions to follow the highest levels of cybersecurity precautions and all security policies and controls issued by the center and to report quickly in case of any incidents.

Al-Smadi explained that the speed of the response was the supporting reason in thwarting this attempt.

He mentioned that the National Center for Cybersecurity formed a crisis cell with the Ministry of Digital Economy that managed to thwart many cyber operations targeting the cyber space of Jordan.

He indicated that the Iranian breach of the public silo company's network aimed to tamper with the temperature systems and affect the strategic wheat stockpile.
