Khaberni - Dr. Amr Khaled, an Islamic preacher, emphasized the importance of self-purification for spiritual elevation, fulfilling the purpose of the Quran, which mentions the word purification 65 times, and sworn by the Creator 11 times that whoever purifies himself will ultimately profit.
In episode twelve of his Ramadan program "Guide - Journey with the Quran", Khaled warned against living life worried only about money and taking care of his children materially and educationally, stating that their spiritual purification is more important than any money you will leave for them.
Surat Ash-Shams and Purification
He added that God Almighty swore in Surat Ash-Shams to ultimately emphasize that success and victory are for those who purify themselves (i.e., enhance and develop themselves), saying: "By the sun and its brightness* And the moon when it follows it* And the day when it reveals it* And the night when it covers it* And the sky and what built it* And the earth and what laid it* And a soul and what formed it* Then inspired it to its wickedness and its righteousness* Indeed, successful is the one who purifies it."
He clarified that when God commanded Moses to go to Pharaoh, the main request from him was: "Go to Pharaoh, indeed, he has transgressed* And say to him, would you purify yourself?"; asking for only one thing: purification.
He mentioned that the phrase "purifies them" is mentioned four times in the Quran, three of which are on behalf of Abraham, with one instance where teaching precedes purification, "Our Lord, send among them a messenger from themselves, reciting to them Your verses and teaching them the Book and wisdom and purifying them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.", and one where God's speech places purification before teaching, "It is He who sent among the unlettered an Apostle from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom although they had been before in clear error."
Purification: a relationship between the servant and his Lord
However, Khaled emphasized that purification is a personal matter between the servant and his Lord, seen by no one but God: "He frowned and turned away* Because there came to him the blind man* And what would make you know that perhaps he might purify himself.."; meaning you do not know what is between him and God, "As for he who thinks he has enough* To him you give attention", you won't be able to purify him, for this is an act of God alone.
The trilogy of purification in Surat Al-Lail
He highlighted the trilogy of purification in "Surat Al-Lail", explaining that this trilogy revolves around: "So as for he who gives and fears God (worship), and the second: and believes in the best (good deeds), the result: 'We will ease him toward ease', (it unlocks what has been halted and stalled), and the chapter concludes with the same trilogy: 'He who gives his wealth for self-purification (worship) except in seeking the face of his Lord the Most High (good deeds), the result: and he will be satisfied (purification).'
4 acts of worship related to purification
Khaled revealed the relationship of purification to four acts of worship, which are:
- The Quran: it is mentioned four times "recites to you Our verses and purifies you". And in the hadith: "It is said to the reader of the Quran, recite and ascend and chant as you chanted in the world, for your position is at the last verse you recite."
-Prayer: "Indeed, successful is he who purifies himself* and mentions the name of his Lord and prays". Take care of the five daily prayers, and be devout in them before God.
-Charity: "Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase," soften your soul from stinginess with charity.
-Remembrance: "Indeed, successful is he who purifies himself* and mentions the name of his Lord and prays". Try to feel the words: "and I am with him when he mentions me".
4 things to purify yourself with
Khaled stressed that God-consciousness in the Quran is fundamental for purification "So do not claim yourselves purified; He is most knowing of who fears Him". And the prayer of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was: O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it, You are the best who purifies.
He urged piety in four things specifically: "Fear God in them so He may purify you", if you make a mistake: seek forgiveness, then be pious.
1- Fear God in your wealth: "And will avoid it, the most pious* One who gives his wealth for self-purification", give charity to fear your wealth.
2-Fear God in illicit relations: lower your gaze, and beware of adultery "Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that is purer for them.".
3-For spouses fear God among each other: a whole quarter in Surat Al-Baqara about compassion between spouses ends with "That is purer and more wholesome for you.
4- Avoid drinking wrongdoings, for they are an abomination from the devil, and purity cannot coexist with impurity ever.
Khaled urged on doing good deeds, and to bring out the best within you during the month of Ramadan in order for God to elevate and purify you; as the increase in the Quran always comes with doing good, and no attribute does God give an increase for purification, "We shall give more to those who do good, those who did well will have the Best and more".
But how will God purify you?
Khaled answers in two words: favor and mercy, as you purify yourself, you receive spiritual and material purification, citing the verse: "And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have been pure ever, but Allah purifies whom He wills, and Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
