Effective Steps to Get Rid of Bad Breath During Ramadan

Khaberni - Bad breath during Ramadan is mainly attributed to dry mouth caused by decreased saliva production and bacterial build-up due to prolonged fasting.
Saliva is an important factor in mouth protection, as it helps in removing food residues and preventing bacterial growth.
Causes of bad breath during fasting

Decreased saliva secretion: Saliva secretion decreases when food and water are cut off, reducing the mouth's ability to clean itself naturally.

Dehydration: A lack of fluids leads to the accumulation of dead cells and bacteria, which worsens mouth odor.

Poor oral hygiene and foods: Failing to regularly clean teeth and tongue, in addition to consuming foods like garlic and onions, or smoking, or caffeine.

Other medical conditions: Some diseases may exacerbate bad breath.

Effective steps to get rid of bad breath in Ramadan

    Clean teeth regularly

Use a toothbrush twice daily after iftar and before bedtime for 2–3 minutes, with fluoride toothpaste.

Use dental floss or an interdental brush to remove food residues from areas that the regular brush cannot reach.

    Clean your tongue

Use a scraper or tongue brush to remove accumulated bacteria, as they are the main cause of bad breath.

    Maintain hydration

Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water between iftar and suhoor to maintain mouth moisture.

Consume fruits and vegetables high in water content such as cucumber, celery, and watermelon.

    Avoid irritating foods and drinks

Reduce garlic and onions, and fatty or sugar-rich foods.

Reduce drinks containing caffeine or sugars, and use water or herbal tea as a substitute.

    Use mouthwash and rinsing

Choose an alcohol-free mouthwash twice daily to combat germs.

Take care of general oral health

Visit the dentist regularly before and after Ramadan.

        Quit or reduce smoking.

Follow a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
