Khaberni - Dr. Anastasia Lebedeva, Associate Professor at the University of Biotechnology, points out that even mild dehydration of the body lessens attention, the speed of processing information, short-term memory, and decision-making.
She says: "The brain comprises 70 - 75 percent water. Dehydration hinders blood flow, slows the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to nerve cells, and disrupts the transmission of nerve signals. Consequently, a person suffers from fatigue, headaches, and decreased mental performance."
According to her, pure water is most effective in maintaining cognitive functions because it contains no sugars, stimulants, or additional substances that affect metabolic processes.
It is worth mentioning that a joint study conducted by British and American scientists showed that drinking enough water can improve mental abilities.
Scientists have long proven the health benefits of drinking a glass of water on an empty stomach, as the body after waking up needs to activate and prepare for eating and engaging in activities.
The study included ordinary individuals who underwent simple tests in thinking and logic. Experiments were conducted in the morning and afternoon, after breakfast and lunch. Morning tests were conducted first, and the results were carefully analyzed, but no significant differences were found. However, after the participants were asked to drink a glass of water after lunch, they noticed a noticeable improvement in their results.
According to the researchers, drinking water positively affects thinking processes and brain functions. However, it is necessary to moderate water intake, as excessive drinking can negate the effects.
Moreover, scientists confirm that the improvement in cognitive functions after drinking water is temporary. While intelligence levels may increase, they return to their previous levels within two hours.
