Arrival of the Worlds Largest Aircraft Carrier at the US Base in Crete Greece

Khaberni - The American aircraft carrier "Gerald R. Ford," the largest in the world, has arrived at the American naval base in Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete, on its way to join a large US military buildup in the Middle East.

President Donald Trump, who last year ordered strikes on Iran, has reiterated his threat to Tehran to take new military action unless a new agreement is reached on its nuclear program, which Western countries fear aims to develop a nuclear weapon.

The carrier arrived at the Greek island on Monday.

The Greek Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the arrival of the carrier, and the US Embassy in Athens did not immediately respond.

The US Naval Support Facility in Souda Bay hosts about a thousand people, including active-duty military personnel, American civilian employees, local staff, contractors, as well as their family members.

Washington currently deploys more than 12 naval units in the Middle East, including the aircraft carrier "Abraham Lincoln," nine destroyers, and three littoral combat ships.

It is rare for two American aircraft carriers to be in the region at the same time, each carrying dozens of warplanes and manned by thousands of sailors.
