UN Commissioner Israel intensifies efforts for unlawful annexation of Palestinian territories

Khaberni - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said that Israel is proceeding to deepen its control over the occupied Palestinian territories through new decisions that "entrench the unlawful annexation" of the West Bank.

Turk emphasized that any sustainable settlement in the Middle East can only be achieved through a two-state solution, by establishing an independent and viable Palestinian state alongside Israel, in accordance with international law and United Nations resolutions, pointing out that the Israeli policy of unlawful annexation of Palestinian territories undermines Palestinians' right to self-determination.

The West Bank is witnessing an unprecedented escalation and intensification of settlement policy, making UN warnings about "actual annexation" more severe and clear.

UN reports have documented the continuation of the wide-scale military operations that Israel began in 2025 and extended into early 2026, including hundreds of raids and detentions in various areas of the West Bank, from Jenin and Tulkarm in the north to Hebron in the south.

Between January and February of this year, several Palestinians were killed including a child, and more than a hundred were injured in military operations or settler attacks, with reports of forced displacement of families due to settler violence in rural areas and the Jordan Valley.

The right-wing extremist government of Netanyahu has been approving the expansion of settlements and "whitewashing" random outposts since late 2025, emphasizing that the strategic goal aims to establish settlements that disrupt the contiguity of Palestinian communities and prevent the establishment of a geographically contiguous Palestinian state.
