Khaberni - A severe snowstorm struck the northeastern coast of the United States, causing widespread disruption in air travel, school closures, and suspension of transportation services, while several states declared a state of emergency, urging residents to stay at home for their safety.
Airlines canceled thousands of flights domestically and internationally, with major airports in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia especially affected, amid expectations that the storm's impact will continue in the coming hours.
Air travel halted
International airports, including John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark, experienced hundreds of cancellations and delays, causing widespread disruption to travel.
The effects of the storm extended to more than 40 million people across about 11 states, with forecasts of heavy snowfall up to 60 centimeters in some areas, accompanied by strong winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, leading to dangerously low visibility and making travel nearly impossible at times.
States including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania declared emergencies, while authorities imposed a ban on non-essential travel and gradually halted train and bus services, also closing schools, universities, and government offices, while emergency plans were activated and National Guard teams were deployed to deal with the aftermath of the storm.
The harsh weather conditions also caused power outages in over 100,000 homes due to fallen trees and damaged power lines, while emergency teams worked to restore services and clear roads blocked by snow accumulation.
Authorities urged residents to be cautious and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, warning that risks could persist even after the snow stops falling due to ice formation and falling temperatures, noting that it might take several days to return life to normal in the most affected areas.
