Khaberni - Ten people were killed and others injured in a horrific traffic accident in Port Said, north Egypt, today, Thursday, the first day of the holy month of Ramadan.
Local media, citing authorities, reported that the accident occurred due to a collision between a heavy truck and a pick-up truck loaded with workers on the 30th of June Axis, south of Port Said.
Ambulances transported 10 bodies to the health care authority hospitals, and two injured were taken to the 30th of June Hospital.
Police investigations revealed that the two vehicles collided due to excessive speed. Meanwhile, local media reported that some bodies were scattered into pieces due to the impact.
Executive and security leaders moved to the site of the accident, and the public prosecutor ordered the continuation of investigations to determine the circumstances of the accident.
According to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, the number of road accident injuries in Egypt was 76,362 in 2024 compared to 71,016 in 2023, an increase of 7.5%.
According to official data, Egypt recorded more than 33,000 deaths and 315,000 injuries due to road accidents between 2019 and 2023.
A report from the Prime Minister's office mentioned that road projects led to a decrease in the number of fatalities from car accidents, with 5,260 deaths occurring in 2024, and 5,861 in 2023, compared to 8,211 in 2016.
