What happens to the body when you completely stop drinking coffee

Khaberni  - Nutrition expert Dr. Irina Besariova stated that the habit of starting the day by drinking coffee can gradually transform into a serious addiction that is hard to get rid of, due to the increasing reliance on caffeine.

The doctor explained that consuming coffee triggers a strong desire to consume caffeine due to its effect in stimulating the production of happiness hormones, energizing the body, and improving concentration. However, she warned that this beverage, besides its benefits, could negatively affect sleep quality and the health of the nervous system.

What happens to the body when you stop drinking coffee?

According to Besariova, suddenly stopping coffee intake can lead to withdrawal symptoms, as the body quickly adjusts to the energy provided by caffeine. During the first few days, a person may suffer from several side effects, most notably:
•    Headaches due to the dilation of blood vessels in the brain;
•    Feeling sleepy due to the lack of caffeine;
•    Irritability, as a result of decreased stimulation of happiness hormones;
•    Poor concentration;
•    Digestive issues, due to caffeine's effect on bowel movement.

The doctor added that these symptoms typically last from four to five days, then gradually begin to fade. After about four weeks, the individual feels a renewed energy and notable improvement in their general condition.

She confirmed that stopping coffee consumption positively reflects on health, as sleep becomes deeper, easier to fall into and wake up from, mood improves, and anxiety decreases, and in some cases, blood pressure may return to normal levels.

Gradual cessation is better

Besariova advised a gradual reduction in coffee drinking rather than an abrupt stop to prevent the aggravation of withdrawal symptoms. She noted that if a person is used to drinking four to five cups a day, it is best to reduce the amount to two or three cups during the first two weeks, then to just one cup in the third week, before completely stopping after the body adjusts to lower doses of caffeine.

Who should refrain from coffee?

The doctor explained that certain groups should stop consuming coffee entirely, especially those suffering from chronic diseases in the digestive system, or cardiovascular and mental health disorders. These conditions include gastritis, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, insomnia, rapid heartbeat, and high blood pressure.

Besariova concluded by pointing out that the acceptable daily amount of coffee, if there are no health contraindications, is two to three cups (200 milliliters per cup) without adding sugar or flavorings, noting that one cup contains about 90–100 milligrams of caffeine, while the safe daily consumption amount is about 400 milligrams.
