Palestinian Representative Nominated for the Presidency of the UN General Assembly

Khaberni  - La Niece Collins, spokeswoman for the office of the President of the eightieth session of the United Nations General Assembly, stated that three candidates are competing for the presidency of the eighty-first General Assembly session.

In a statement to journalists, she mentioned that the list of candidates for this position includes the Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Towhid Hossain, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus Andreas Kakouris, and the Permanent Palestinian Observer to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour.

According to her, so far, only the Palestinian diplomat has submitted a document outlining his vision for the future of the General Assembly.

According to the General Rules of Procedure of the United Nations General Assembly, the President of this body may be a representative of one of the member states of the international organization.

However, in July 2024, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in an explanatory memorandum submitted to the General Assembly, pointed to the possibility of electing representatives from Palestine, which enjoys observer status in the international organization, to this position as well.

Collins stated that the election process for the next President is scheduled to take place on June 2nd.
