Khaberni - U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent said on Tuesday that a very fruitful relationship might develop between Washington and Beijing, and he welcomed China as a competitor, according to "Reuters".
Bisent added, while participating in the CEO conference of "BTG Pactual" held in Sao Paulo, Brazil: "U.S.-China relations are now in a very comfortable state. We will be competitors, but we want this competition to be fair. We do not want to decouple from China, but we need to mitigate risks."
Bisent is preparing to meet with the Chinese Deputy Prime Minister, He Li Feng, in the coming weeks, ahead of President Donald Trump's planned visit to China in April.
The Treasury Department has not disclosed any details regarding the time or place of the meeting between Bisent and the Chinese official.
Bisent clarified at the conference that Washington seeks to "retake sovereignty" from China in strategic industrial sectors such as critical minerals, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals.
He said: "We will always be competitors. I believe that competition makes you better, and limits stagnation."
