Portugal Struggles to Drain Full Reservoirs as More Storms Approach

Khaberni - Authorities in Portugal released massive amounts of water from full reservoirs following the Atlantic storm "Christine", as the country braces today, Monday, for more heavy rain.

Within two days, about 500 million cubic meters of water were controlled released into rivers, according to the government channel "RTP", citing the Portuguese Environment Agency.

This volume of water is equivalent to the consumption of the Greater Lisbon area with its population of three million people for three years.

Almost all the country's rivers overflowed, at a time when weather experts warned of more bad weather in the coming days.

The storm hit the coast of Portugal early last Wednesday with winds exceeding 170 kilometers per hour.

At least five people initially lost their lives in the storm, and three others died after the storm had passed. Hundreds were injured during cleanup operations.
