Iran arrests four foreigners on charges of riot participation

Khaberni - Four foreign nationals, whose nationalities were not specified, were arrested in Iran on charges of "participating in riots," according to the state television report on Monday, following a wave of protests that was met with a violent crackdown in January.

The Iranian television said, "These individuals were arrested during an operation" in Tehran province, without specifying the date of the operation.

It added, "During the inspection of one of the suspects' bags, four homemade stun grenades were found, used in riots and disturbances in the area."

Tehran accuses Israel and the United States of being involved in the riots.

The Iranian authorities assert that most of the victims were members of the security forces or bystanders killed by "terrorists". However, NGOs based abroad accuse the Iranian security forces of deliberately targeting demonstrators.

On January 24, the official news agency "IRNA" reported the arrest of two foreign nationals in the west of the country.
