Newspaper Iran targeted a joint USBritish base in the Indian Ocean

Khaberni - The "Wall Street Journal" reported that several American officials said Iran launched two medium-range ballistic missiles toward the Diego Garcia base, but they missed the joint US-British military base in the Indian Ocean.

The newspaper added that one of the missiles malfunctioned during launch, while a US warship fired an SM-3 interceptor missile at the other missile, but it was not determined whether the interception was successful. The newspaper did not specify when the missiles were launched.

The White House, the British Embassy in Washington, and the Department of Defense did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

The Iran war entered its 22nd day, having erupted on February 28, 2026, following widespread airstrikes by the United States and Israel as part of the operations "Epic Wrath" and "Lion's Roar," which targeted vital and military facilities, as well as command centers in Tehran and several other cities, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day, along with several senior officials and leaders, including the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani, and prominent leaders in the Revolutionary Guards.

In response, Iran launched "True Promise 4," firing hundreds of missiles and drones towards Israel and countries in the region, along with closing the Strait of Hormuz, which led to rising energy prices.

The war extended into Lebanon on March 2nd, after Hezbollah fired missiles at the Israeli occupation in retaliation for the assassination of Ali Khamenei, to which Israel responded by conducting widespread air raids and a ground incursion in the south.
