Khaberni - Recent results from an Italian study published in the European Journal of Heart Diseases, which monitored the health condition of 849 cancer survivors, showed that adopting a heart-healthy lifestyle can significantly extend life and improve survival chances.
According to the study highlighted by the program "With the Wise," despite significant advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment and the increase in global survival rates, survivors remain at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and chronic health complications, some of which may be due to the effects of chemotherapy or radiation, or lifestyle post-recovery.
The study concluded that adhering to a set of healthy habits not only reflects on heart health, but also reduces the chances of relapse or contracting other chronic diseases, emphasizing that cancer prevention starts with daily behavior, not just medication.
The study identified seven basic healthy habits considered the cornerstone in improving the health and extending the lives of survivors:
First: Regular physical activity
Physical activity topped the recommendations, as it plays a role in improving heart efficiency, boosting circulation, reducing inflammation, and enhancing mental health. The study pointed out that regular moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or swimming, is sufficient to achieve tangible benefits.
Second: A balanced diet
A healthy, balanced diet, rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and low in saturated fats and sugars, plays a central role in supporting immunity, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing the risks of heart disease, which are among the leading causes of death among cancer survivors.
Third: Quitting smoking
The study emphasized that smoking remains one of the most dangerous factors threatening survivors' health, as it increases the risk of heart disease and new cancers, and undermines the benefits achieved after treatment, making quitting a crucial step that cannot be postponed.
Fourth: Maintaining a healthy weight
Weight gain or obesity post-recovery can lead to hormonal disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, and increases the health burden on the body.
Fifth: Controlling blood pressure
High blood pressure is a common problem among survivors, especially after certain treatments. Controlling it is essential for preventing clots and heart disease and enhances the chance of living longer in better health.
Sixth: Managing cholesterol levels
High cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease, and the study confirmed that survivors who maintain normal cholesterol levels enjoy better chances of survival compared to others.
Seventh: Lowering blood sugar levels
Finally, the study emphasized the importance of controlling sugar levels, especially since some cancer treatments may increase the likelihood of developing diabetes, making continuous monitoring and proper nutrition essential.
The program "With the Wise" concluded with a clear message that surviving cancer does not mean the end of the health battle, but the beginning of a new stage that requires ongoing awareness and a disciplined lifestyle.
Adhering to these seven habits, as the Italian study confirms, not only grants survivors additional years of life but also ensures a longer, higher quality, and more stable health life, transforming recovery from mere survival to a sustainable health victory.
