Partial Financial Shutdown Begins in America and Expectations of a Quick End

Khaberni - The United States entered a partial financial shutdown at midnight on Saturday (5:00 GMT) with an anticipated quick end as the House of Representatives votes Monday on a bill in this regard.

Three months after the longest government shutdown in United States history, this time the financial paralysis comes as a result of the Democratic opposition's refusal to approve a proposed budget for the Department of Homeland Security without imposing restrictions on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following the killing of two American citizens by its officers in Minneapolis.

On Friday, the US Senate adopted a financial bill aimed at limiting the duration of the federal government shutdown.

The partial shutdown actually begins at midnight on Friday (5:00 AM GMT Saturday) but could end at the start of next week when the House votes on the text.

The text makes the expected consequences minimal as the shutdown may only last over the weekend, without the need to put many public sector employees on furlough.

The text was adopted by a majority of 71 votes in favor versus 29 against, resulting from an agreement between President Donald Trump and Democratic senators who refused to approve the proposed budget for the Department of Homeland Security before implementing reforms in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after two American citizens were killed by federal security officers in Minneapolis (north).

In the end, an agreement was reached to adopt five of the six sections of the budget text, while the section related to the Department of Homeland Security will be subject to further negotiations over the next two weeks.

However, since the version adopted by the Senate differs from the version previously approved by the House of Representatives, it must be presented to it again before its possible final adoption.

The vote in the House of Representatives cannot take place before Monday at the earliest, and therefore the federal government will find itself in a partial shutdown at midnight on Friday.

It is not certain that the House will accept the new version drafted by the Senate.

Last week, it seemed that the text would be adopted before the deadline on January 31st, but the events of last Saturday in Minneapolis changed everything.

The killing of Alex Britti by federal security officers in this city sparked a wave of outrage within the political class.

On Friday, the Democratic minority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, declared the demands of the Democrats, saying that he wants to "rein in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and put an end to the violence."
