A huge oil shipment arrives in Syria What is its source

Khaberni - Syria received a huge crude oil shipment to contribute to securing fuel supplies, coinciding with a significant decrease in domestic production since 2011.

According to the details, today, Monday, 3 tankers docked at the Baniyas oil terminal and began unloading procedures.

The shipping details show that an oil shipment arrived under complex logistical arrangements, reflecting the diversity of imported materials including crude oil, derivatives, and liquefied petroleum gas.

These developments come at a sensitive time for the Syrian energy sector, as efforts are underway to restart refineries at full capacity, improve supply efficiency, amidst economic pressures, and a clear decline in the average imports compared to previous years.

Data indicate that an oil shipment of about 668,000 barrels of crude oil arrived at the Syrian coasts, coming from Russia, according to the ship tracking data monitored -in real time- by the specialized energy platform.

The shipment arrived on board the tanker CARMA -which flies the flag of Oman- with a quantity totaling 91,531 metric tons (668,000 barrels), supporting Syrian refineries' stockpiles amidst limited local production.

Also among the shipments, the diesel tanker TENDUA docked, loaded with about 29,927 metric tons, to meet market needs for derivatives, especially with the rising demand for fuel during the winter season.

The liquefied petroleum gas tanker GAZ PROVIDENCE also arrived, loaded with more than 7,186 metric tons, as part of the latest shipment that underwent technical procedures before unloading.

After completing the freedom of association procedures and the technical checks, the Syrian Petroleum Company’s teams began the operations of connecting and unloading the tankers at the maritime terminal, signaling the start of pumping quantities into the designated tanks.

The latest huge oil shipment coming to Syria reflects data from the energy research unit showing a decline in the country’s average crude oil imports by sea by 11% annually, or approximately 6,000 barrels per day during the first ten months of 2025.

The data clarify that the average imports decreased to 48,000 barrels per day between January and October 2025, compared to about 54,000 barrels per day during the same period of 2024, indicating fluctuations in supplies.

The figures show that Russia provided a significant portion of Syria's crude oil needs transported by sea during 2025, unlike previous years, when Iran was the main supplier before the political changes.

Syria had stopped importing maritime shipments since December 2024, then resumed obtaining the first shipments in March 2025, this time from Russia, marking a strategic shift in the course of imports.

Monthly data show clear fluctuations in imports, as recorded in September 2025, the highest level since the fall of the regime, with an average of 94.4 thousand barrels per day, before declining in the following October.

The numbers confirm that Syria did not import any maritime oil shipments during January and February 2025, with the data for the first quarter limited only to March, which saw an increase of about 5,000 barrels per day compared to the previous year.
