Breast Cancer How to Identify a Dangerous Lump

Khaberni - Breast cancer is the most common among women worldwide, with more than 2.3 million new cases and about 670,000 deaths recorded during 2022. Despite the continuing rise in numbers with increasing life expectancy, doctors emphasize that early detection provides real opportunities for treatment and recovery, making it crucial to pay attention to any changes in the breast.

What is a breast lump?
Not every lump in the breast indicates cancer, as most lumps are benign, such as cysts or natural changes in the tissue. However, the appearance of a new or unusual lump, or its persistence after the menstrual cycle ends, should not be ignored and should be checked by a doctor.

According to the "Times of India," experts recommend focusing on several indicators when noticing any lump, including:

Newness and difference: Is the lump new or different from what you have been used to?
Texture and movement: Cancerous lumps are often hard, with irregular edges, and do not move easily when pressed, but this does not mean that soft lumps are always safe.
Accompanying changes: Such as skin redness, the appearance of bumps or a texture resembling orange peel, nipple retraction, or abnormal discharge.
Change over time: Increase in the size or hardness of the lump over weeks, or persistent pain in a specific area.

When should you visit the doctor?

If you notice any worrisome lump or unusual change in the breast or nipple, it is advised to schedule a medical appointment without delay. The evaluation may include a clinical examination, imaging with X-rays or ultrasound, and sometimes a biopsy for accurate diagnosis.

Although most breast lumps are non-cancerous, being aware of your body and early monitoring is a fundamental step to protecting your health and increasing the chances of successful treatment.
