The 55-year-old Damon appeared alongside his friend Ben Affleck in a recorded interview, where he spoke candidly about the fundamental differences between watching movies in theaters and on streaming platforms.
The star noted that the cinema experience is like going to church, where people gather at a specific time to share a collective experience that waits for no one, while home viewing is completely different in terms of the level of focus and attention, according to the "Metro" newspaper.
Damon explained that the traditional rules for making action movies relied on distributing three major scenes throughout the movie chapters, with the bulk of the production money and the most thrilling and expensive scenes displayed at the end of the work.
He noted that the current approach on platforms insists on the need to place a major action scene within the first five minutes of the work to attract viewers and prevent them from leaving the platform, with writers asked to repeat the explanation of the movie's plot three or four times within the dramatic dialogue; this is because viewers are busy browsing their phones and do not give the screen their full attention.
In related context, Damon expressed his concern about this approach saying that it would start to truly affect the way cinematic stories are told, but Affleck, who co-stars in the movie "The Rip" with him, responded that this format does not apply to all Netflix content, citing works that succeeded without following this pattern, which confirmed that quality is able to attract viewers without needing these tactics.
