Laporta sets the date for the Barcelona presidency elections

Khaberni - Joan Laporta, President of FC Barcelona, has set Thursday, March 15, as the date for the club's presidential elections, where he hopes to be re-elected for a new term.

This date is the earliest possible for the vote according to the Catalan club's regulations, after Laporta was re-elected for a second term in March 2021, and as he approaches the end of his five-year presidential term.

Laporta said in a video published on the club's official website: "We have agreed today, Thursday, during a board meeting to conduct the FC Barcelona presidency elections on March 15. We are confident that these elections will be exemplary and will witness high levels of participation."

Laporta (63 years old) is expected to face competition from Victor Font, who came second in the previous election with 30% of the votes, behind Laporta who won 54%, in addition to Xavier Vilajoana and Marc Serra.

Laporta is considered the most likely candidate to win again, especially after Barcelona's recent victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup title, and after leading the team to win a domestic treble last season and qualify for the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

However, during his 2021 election campaign, he pledged to keep the club's Argentine legend Lionel Messi in the team, which he was unable to achieve due to the club's difficult financial situation.

During his presidency, Laporta oversaw the project to rebuild the "Camp Nou" stadium, which experienced significant delays before being partially reopened.
