Khaberni - Lucien Müller, the former French football player who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the former coach for clubs like Castellón, Burgos, Zaragoza, and Mallorca, has passed away at the age of 91. The French midfielder was born in the town of Bischoffsheim on September 3, 1934, and rose to prominence during the 1960s, playing for notable European clubs at that time, including Stade de Reims, with whom he won the French league title in 1960 and 1962.
Jean-Pierre Caillot, the president of the French club, expressed his condolences in a statement saying, "We will certainly remember a great figure in the world of football and in the history of Stade de Reims, but he will also remain in memory as a friendly and respectful human being. He embodied with his human values and talent the values of our club."
Müller spent the bulk of his professional career, especially as a coach, in Spain. Before retiring from playing, he wore the jerseys of Real Madrid and Barcelona for three years each. He won the Spanish league title with Real Madrid in 1963, 1964, and 1965, and with Barcelona, he won the Fairs Cup in 1966 and the Copa del Rey in 1968.
Müller returned to Stade de Reims for a second stint, where he retired from playing to begin his coaching career. He started his coaching journey with Castellón for four seasons, before moving on to coach Burgos, Zaragoza, Barcelona, and Mallorca. Mallorca also joined in the wave of condolences, expressing "the deepest condolences on the passing of Lucien Müller." The club added: "The fans of Mallorca mourn today one of the most important figures in the club's history, having left an unforgettable mark."
Under Müller's leadership as a coach, Mallorca was promoted to the first division in the 1982/1983 season. Outside Spain, his coaching journey was limited to Monaco, where he managed for three seasons and won the French Cup in 1985. He then returned to Spain to finally conclude his career at Castellón in 1992.
