24 killed and dozens injured in a train collision in southern Spain

Khaberni - At least 24 people were killed and others were injured in southern Spain, on Sunday, following the derailment of two trains near the city of Adamos in Andalusia, according to the police.

The Civil Guard reported at least 24 deaths, while emergency services in the Andalusia region, where the accident occurred, confirmed that 25 others were injured in the collision of the two trains, which were carrying hundreds of passengers.

A train operated by the company Erio, traveling from Málaga (south) to Madrid, derailed near Adamos, located about 190 km north of Málaga, «and veered onto the adjacent track» where another train was running, collided with it, and also derailed, according to what was explained by the Spanish railway network administration (ADIF). Andalusian rescue services reported that passengers are still trapped in the carriages.

A spokeswoman for the emergency services in the region said, «Health services have been put on alert and so far, five intensive care units have been deployed», in addition to fire teams. Images broadcast by the public channel «TV E» showed the collided trains surrounded by a crowd of people, while ambulances spread out and emergency teams worked to aid the injured.

The public radio reporter «RNE» who was traveling on one of the trains stated on the public channel «TV E» that the collision was like an «earthquake» that shook the train. He added that passengers took emergency hammers to break the windows and exit the train.

According to Spanish media, the Erio train was carrying more than 300 people, and the other train, operated by the Spanish national company «Renfe», more than 100 people. The governor of the Andalusia region, Juan Manuel Moreno, stated on the X platform, «We have sent emergency and logistical support teams to the accident site to provide the necessary assistance».

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that he «is closely following the incident involving the two high-speed trains that derailed at Adamos». He added, «The government is working with the competent authorities and emergency teams to assist the passengers».

At Atocha train station in Madrid, the Governor of Madrid region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, announced that «support teams will be deployed to assist the families» of those affected. The relevant authorities have suspended train services between Madrid and Andalusia.
