Khaberni - 10 people were killed and others injured on Sunday in a high-speed train collision in southern Spain after one of them derailed, according to authorities.
The Civil Guard reported at least 10 fatalities, while emergency services in the Andalusia region, where the accident occurred, confirmed that 25 others were injured in the collision of the two trains carrying hundreds of passengers.
A train operated by Iryo, traveling from Malaga (south) to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz, located about 190 km north of Malaga, "and shifted onto the adjacent track" where another train was operating, collided with it and derailed it as well, according to the Spanish Rail Network Administration (Adif).
A spokeswoman for the emergency services in the region said, "Health services have been put on alert and so far, five intensive care units have been deployed," in addition to firefighting teams.
"Earthquake"
Images broadcast by the public channel "TVE" showed the collided trains surrounded by a crowd of people, while ambulances spread and emergency teams worked to assist the injured.
A public radio "RNE" correspondent, who was traveling on one of the trains, stated to the public channel "TVE" that the collision was like an "earthquake" that shook the train.
He continued that passengers took emergency hammers to break the windows and exit the train.
According to Spanish media, the Iryo train was carrying more than 300 people, and the other train operated by the Spanish national company "Renfe," more than 100 people.
The governor of the Andalusia region, Juan Manuel Moreno, stated on the X platform, "We have sent emergency teams and logistical support to the site of the accident to provide the necessary assistance."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that he "is closely following the incident between the two high-speed trains that derailed in Adamuz."
He added, "The government is working with the relevant authorities and emergency teams to assist the passengers."
