Khaberni - The French authorities have charged swimmer Yannick Agnel, 33 years old, with the sexual assault of his former coach's daughter.
The French Olympic champion was accused of having a relationship with the daughter of his former coach in 2016 when she was 13 years old.
The public prosecutor's office in Colmar, France, has confirmed that Agnel will stand trial as he was an adult at the time of the alleged acts, and he has 10 days to appeal before the Supreme Court in France.
Agnel was first arrested in December 2021 and admitted then to having a relationship with a minor but denied coercion. At the time of the alleged crimes, the girl was 13 years old and Agnel was 24.
According to French judicial officials, it is alleged that the acts took place in several locations, including Mulhouse in eastern France, as well as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during the 2016 Olympics, and in Spain and Thailand.
It is noted that Agnel won two gold medals at the 2012 Olympics before deciding to retire from swimming in 2016.
