Khaberni - Vice President JD Vance urged Europe to take Donald Trump's statements about Greenland seriously, at a time when the American president escalates his threats regarding this Arctic region under Danish jurisdiction that enjoys self-governance.
Vance accused Denmark, another NATO member, and the rest of Europe of failing to protect the island with a strategic location from Russian and Chinese schemes, according to him.
European countries are seeking to respond in a coordinated manner, after the White House earlier this week announced that Trump wants to buy Greenland and did not rule out the military option to achieve this goal, citing U.S. national security.
In response to a question about the Danish region, Vance said at a press conference, "I think my advice to European leaders and anyone else, is to take the American president’s statements seriously."
He added, "What we ask of our European friends is to take the security of that landmass seriously, because if they do not, then the United States will have to do something about it."
He continued, "I will leave it to the president to determine what that will be while we continue to engage in diplomacy with our European friends and everyone else specifically on this issue."
It is scheduled that the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet officials from Denmark and Greenland next week.
Trump has long spoken about annexing Greenland, but he escalated his threats since the military operation last week by U.S. forces in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, during which President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were arrested and taken to the United States.
