Khaberni - The number of local and foreign patents registered with the Directorate for Industrial Property Protection under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply increased last year by 12%, compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to the statistics, the total number of local and foreign patents registered last year was about 124 patents, compared to 111 patents registered in 2024, according to Al-Ghad.
According to official statistics, the registered patents of the year (2025) amounted to 118 foreign patents and 6 local patents, focusing on engineering, pharmaceutical, renewable energy, medical sectors, and pharmaceutical industries.
In response to inquiries from "Al-Ghad", the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply attributed the increase to a set of factors, the most important being the facilitation of procedures related to patent registration, providing advice to inventors, and enhancing the institutional environment for entrepreneurship and research and development, in addition to constant awareness through guidance and direction of inventors, linking with supporting entities, industry and awareness newsletters, workshops, and support for inventors, in line with the economic modernization vision that focuses on innovation and encouraging investment in modern technological and industrial projects.
The ministry considered this increase a positive indicator of the ability of Jordanian individuals, institutions, and companies to innovate and transform creative ideas into industrial applications with economic value. The ministry also confirmed its ongoing efforts to facilitate all procedures related to innovation, and to enhance ongoing awareness campaigns, thus enhancing the competitiveness of the national economy and raising Jordan's standing on the global innovation map.
According to the law, a patent is: a creative idea devised by the inventor in any of the technical fields, related to a product or a manufacturing method or both, that solves a specific problem in any of these fields. The patent also grants its owner an exclusive right over a specified period, in exchange for allowing the public to view the invention in general.
The right granted to the patent owner is to prevent others from manufacturing, using, selling, or displaying that invention, without obtaining the consent of the patent owner.
It should be noted that the kingdom joined the Patent Cooperation Treaty of the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2017, which includes about 158 countries, thus presenting a real opportunity for promoting and attracting investments in the field of patents.
