Man kills 9 people including his children in stabbing in Suriname

Khaberni  - A man killed nine people, including 4 of his children, by stabbing them with a knife on Sunday in the east of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, the small Dutch-speaking country in South America.

A statement issued by the police on Sunday said, "A man killed 4 adults and 5 children using a sharp object. A sixth child and another adult were seriously injured and taken to the hospital."

The statement added, "The Eastern District Police arrived at the site and were forced to open fire during the arrest of the suspect after he attacked their members with a sharp object, and was injured in the leg area and transported to the emergency department in an ambulance to receive medical care under police surveillance."

The police, in their statement, mentioned that "additional information regarding the circumstances of this horrific attack would be provided later."

Local media, which went to the site of the incident in the east of the capital and spoke with neighbors, revealed that the man had been suffering from mental disorders and that four of the children he killed were his own.

President Jenny Gerlings-Simons wrote in a post on X, "At a time when family members and friends should be supporting each other, we face a harsh reality that there is another side to the world. A father ended the lives of his children and killed his neighbors. I wish all those who are grieving strength, courage, and solace during this very difficult time."
